[Schneehage letter; Benjestorf Family History by Heinrich Schneehage]

Johann was born at Barsinghausen, near Hannover on 28 October 1768. [Hannover Lutheran records show birth on 30 October]
In 1797 he came to Osterwald after acquiring a small fortune , perhaps as a suttler during the "Coalition War". Near the end of August of that year he went to the local pastor, Ernst Tatter,>
to discuss posting the banns for his upcoming marriage to a local girl. Johann spoke High German because of the locality where he was born & raised, but the local population of Osterwald spoke Low >
German. Apparently Johann had started using the Low German version of his name [Penjestorf], perhaps for purposes of facilitating doing business in Osterwald. [Pfennig means penny in High German; >
in Low German penny is Penje]. When Johann introduced himself to Pastor Tatter he used the Low German version of his name, but he spoke with a High German accent which made the initial "P" of Pe>
njestorf sound like a "B", so Pastor Tatter thought his name was Benjestorf, and that is what he wrote in the official Church Record Book. So it was written and so it remained!
On 10 September, 1797 Johann married Catharine Marie Feesche using the name "Benjestorf". They went by the names "Heinrich" & "Marie".
Heinrich & Marie had eight children: Johann Heinrich Christian Gerhard; Johann Christian who died in infancy ; Sophie Dorothee Margarete; Catharine Dorothee who married Anton Böfer in 1831; >
Margartehe (Sp?) Marie; Johann Heinrich Friedrich who was my great-great grandfather; Johann Heinrich Christian Daniel; and Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm.
Johann died in Osterwald, near Hannover, on 28 January 1838.

Dorothea was born 18 June, 1844, in Javngyde, Skanderborg, Denmark.[Rix family info says 17 June and county Århuus]
She married Hans Jørgen Rix on 24 February, 1866.
Their first child was born in Javnsgyde after which the family apparently moved to Laasby, Århus, Denmark.
Dorthea died ca 1912.

(Information fom Clara Rix & the LDS International Genealogical Index; Family Group sheet completed by unknown person~probably Ray Rix; Tulstrup Parish Record Book; Danish Censuses) (e-mail from Hanne Rix 3 Aug 2007).

Aunt Clara spelled Hans' middle name "JORDAN". The other spelling is from the LDS IGI and sounds more like a Danish name. It is also possible that it was actually spelled Jørgan or Jürge [1860 Census of Denmark shows a "Hans Jørgen RIX" born ca 1846 living in Fruering Parish in the County of Skanderborg. He was employed as a "farmer's boy"].
Rix is NOT a common name, and most of the information I have found on Rix's show them coming from Germany. Perhaps the family originated in the Schleswig/ Holstein area and Elaine's ancestors elected to remain in Denmark after that area was annexed by Prussia.
*************************************************
An old Family Group sheet shows Hans' birthplace as Germany.
He was born 24 February, 1846, in an unidentified part of Germany.
Hans married Dorothea Marie Nielsen on 24 February, 1866, in Tulstrup Parish, Gjern, Skanderborg, Denmark. Their first child was born in Javnsgyde, Skanderborg, Denmark, after which they apparently moved to Laasby, Aarhus, Denmark.
He died in Losbry (?) [probably Laasby/Låsby], Denmark in 1922.
*********************************
Hans Jørgen Rix was working as a "farm boy" for the Rasmus Nielsen family in Fruering, Skanderborg at the time of the 1860 Danish Census.
He married Dorothea Marie Nielsen in Tulstrup Church, Gjern, Skanderborg, Denmark, on 24 February, 1866.

Søren was born in Laasby, Aarhus, Denmark, on 15 September, 1880.
He served in the Danish Military as an Officer, probably in the Cavalry, prior to coming to the United States according to family aural tradition.
He arrived at New York aboard the SS Hekla from Copenhagen on 16 October, 1904 with $20 and 70 cents in his pocket.
His destination was Chicago, Illinois, where his uncle, Olaf (?) Rix lived at 105 29th Street. [Olaf Rix was actually Søren's cousin]
Søren eventually showed up in Fremont, Nebraska by about 1907.
He was working as a 'coachman/groom' for a family in Fremont when he met his wife Anna Kistina Jensen.
He worked as a farmer until killed in a train/auto accident on 11 October 1939.

Wilhelmina was born on 14 May 1863. She married Wilhelm Benjestorf.
Wilhelm & Wilhelmina apparently had two children who died young. The Schneehage letter lists 2 children of unknown name and gender followed by triple pluses. He uses pluses to indicate death date>
s.
Wilhelmina died on 28 April 1939.

Friedrich was born to Heinrich and Marie in Osterwald, Hannover, on 15 November 1810.
He married Dorothea Deeke (or Deke] who was born in Lutter in the Landkreis Neustadt am Rübenberge.
Friedrich married Luise Cathrine Dorothee Hanne Deeke ca 1840. Friedrich & Dorothee had 5 children: Sophie Marie Elisabeth Wilhelmina; Christian Friedrich Heinrich; Heinrich, my great grand>
father; Dorothee Eleonore Sophie, who married Heinrich Schneehage of Osterwald and became the mother of the Heinrich Schneehage who wrote "Benjestorf: The Origin and Evolution of a Family"; and >
Wilhelm who married Wilhelmine Bährens. Wilhelm & Wilhelmina had 7 children including Heinrich who was the grandfather of the Heinrich Benjestorf now living in the Benjestorf Manor in Osterwald (200>
2).
In 1866 the Kingdom of Hannover was invaded by Prussia. Apparently Friedrich vocally opposed the Prussian rule and advised young men, including his own sons, to avoid being drafted into the Prussi>
an Army by fleeing to America. He was said to be well informed about America through correspondence with people who had already gone there, and books on the subject.
Friedrich died in Osterwald on 12 March 1883.
