    • [verbal information from various family members; 1881 & 1891 British censuses; BVRI info from Michelle Davies (Dorset List) Death Certificate]

William was born on 4 December, 1871, in Symondsbury, Dorset, England. He was Christened at the Church of St. John on 7 January, 1872.
Sometime after the birth of his brother in the mid 1870's, Williams family started a series of moves in search of work and a better life. The move took them to the small town of Piddletrenthyde[or>
possibly Puddletown] where they may have remained for a year or two between censuses. The family continued toward London and lived in Twickenham, Middlesex, for a while within sight of London. The>
y apparently didn't care much for London and moved back toward the south into Surrey, living at Wimbledon, Ewell, Tadworth and Kingswood.
William met Harriet Cheesman, a young woman from Capel, and they were married in St. John the Baptist Church there on 18 August, 1897. Witnesses to the marriage were John England (William's brothe>
r], Walter Fish [husband of Mary Cheesman], Mary Cheesman Fish [Harriet's sister], and Fanny Cheesman [Harriet's sister].
In the marriage register, both William and his father, Joseph were identified as "Publican". William's abode was shown as Kingswood.
William's first two children, Daisy Ellen & Kathleen May, were said to have been born in the family quarters above the Bricklayers Arms pub, Tadworth, near Kingswood.
At the time of the 1901 census, William, Harriet and his two daughters were living in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire [about 45 miles nnw of London and about 15 miles north of Tring]. William's occupat>
      ion was Publican.
Their son , Alf, may have been born in Soulbury.
I received a message from Pat Gray on 14 Feb, 2005, in response to my question about pubs in Soulbury:
According to Pat there is one pub in Soulbury, "The Boot", which has been there at least since the 180's. She thinks it was an old "Coaching Inn", meaning they would have stabled travelers horse>
s, and the mail coach horses.
There is an old photo of the landlady, Mrs. Ball, ca 1895.
Pat is planning to meet the man who ran the pub for 18 years. She also plans to meet the local historian.
She now has a digital camera and has promised to send me some pictures.
William emigrated from England to Canada when his children were young, ca 1906, apparently motivated to do so by reports from his sister-in-law Ann [Aunt Nan] and her husband who had emigrated to G>
oodeve, Saskatchewan in 1905. He left them and his wife with relatives while he homesteaded in Canada.
At some point he and his wife left the homestead and eventually ended up in Ladner, British Columbia, where he continued to be a farmer.
William James England died on 2 June, 1945, in Ladner, B.C., Canada.
Joan's notes indicate birth date 4 Dec, 1873, in Tadworth. His death certificate shows 4 Dec, 1871 [informant Alf England].
He is buried in Boundary Bay Cemetery in Delta, BC.
