3-7. The Arthurís of Capel - Ancestors and Descendants of Arthur Cheeseman
On 30 May, 1815, John Arthur, my great-great-great-great grandfather, married Mary Worsfold in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Capel, Surrey. John was born about 1791 somewhere in the County of Surrey, possibly in the village of Betchworth which is located five or six miles north of Capel and a mile or two east of the town of Dorking. His bride, Mary Worsfold, was probably the daughter of Thomas
Worsfold and Mary Bristow, who was baptized in Capel on 15 May, 1791. After their marriage, John and Mary Arthur lived at Broomellís, a farm located about three quarters of a mile northeast of the Capel village center. John was no doubt employed as a farm laborer by the owner or tenant of Broomellís Farm. On 17 September, 1815, less than
four months after their wedding ceremony, John and Mary Arthur baptized their first child, Rebecca Arthur, in Capel. John and Mary had at least three other children, all of them girls. Mary died in mid-June, 1826, and was buried at Capel on 25 June, 1826. She was only thirty-five years old.

Arthur Cheesman was born on 14 March, 1846 in Capel, Surrey, England, where he apparently lived all his life. He was probably born at the Aldhurst Farm [or Hatchland] near Capel where his mother l>
ived and worked for the John Dale family, Quakers who provided housing and work for orphans, widows and destitute families. Arthur's mother's first husband had died in February, 1839, and she appar>
ently did not remarry until April, 1850. It seems likely that Arthur's father was one of the residents of Aldhurst Farm. Arthur was baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Capel, on 3 May, 1846.
By 1851, Arthur's mother was living across Temple Lane from Aldhurst at another farm, Hatchland, which was also leased by John Dale. She had recently married her second husband, Charles Ede. Her>
Uncle, Samuel Arthor, who's wife, Rebecca, had died since the previous census, was head of the household.
Arthur was mainly an agricultural laborer, but by the 1881 census he was working as a brickmaker and he and his family probably lived in one of the Roagate Cottages, a small group of cottages buil>
t beside the railroad track and situated only about 4/10 mile from the Brick and Tile works where he probably worked.
By 1891 Arthur had resumed working as an agricultural laborer, but he still lived at Roagate Cottages. [both 1881 & 1891 censuses show his residence as "Reigate Fields". Mary Day, an amateur hi>
storian who lives in Capel does not know of any place called Reigate Fields and believes it was actually Roagate Cottages].
At the time of the 1901 census, 31 March, 1901, Arthur and his family had relocated to an undecipherable address near Seamans Green, an extension of Capel Street. Edward Lucas, a 20 year old "Dome>
stic Groom" from Capel, was visiting the Cheeseman's at the time of the census.
Sometime before 1928 Arthur and his wife, Harriet, moved into #2 Sunnybank Cottage, a small cottage on Capel Street that had been converted to a duplex.
While living there in 1931, Arthur Cheeseman passed away, and was buried in Capel on 22 January, 1931.

      Hi Don

Arthur Cheeseman is not closely related to me - he was my ancestor's great nephew. I have not really researched him and assumed William Cheeseman was his father as he was his mother's first husband. That his father was a Richard Worsfold is interesting as Rebecca's mother was a Worsfold. I am descended from Susanna Arthur - sister of Arthur's grandfather, John Arthur. I have researched our Arthur family through the Betchworth and Buckland Parish records and the IGI. Susanna and John's parents were Samuel and Jane Arthur. Samuel is probably the Samuel Arthur, son of Robert, bap. Nov 1730 Leatherhead. He is probably also the son of Robert and Martha who had a number of children at Buckland near Betchworth between 1720 and 1740. Samuel was described as aged 87 of Gadbrook, Buckland at his death in Jun 1818. The Arthurs in Mickleham and Ashstead appear to be related but I am not yet sure exactly how. Robert and Winifred Arthur who had children in Mickleham both died, a couple of years either side of Samuel's birth, in Leatherhead. Robert and Martha's eldest daughter Susanna was born in Ashstead and a Robert and Eleanor had children there in the early 1700s, Robert and Martha's 3rd daughter was called Eleanor. This is as far as I have got with the Arthur family. I believe Jane died aged 56 in 1811 - this would have made her just 16 when she married while Samuel was 39! I believe she is the only child of John Tidy and his first wife Jane (Roberts) - John's mother was a Bonwick (an important Charlwood family) while his sister Mary married Thomas Sanders (from another important Charlwood family) sadly any money appears to have failed to come down to John and his family.
